Cairns Hockey Association's new stadium taking shape by roger mainwood

January 2019

Construction for stage 1 of the $2.7M upgrade of the Cairns North Sports Precinct is underway.

This Commonwealth-funded project will assist the growth of hockey in the Far North in alignment with development strategies for Northern Australia.

TPG Architects devised a master plan which will see a new stadium linking the ‘Rainforest’ and ‘Reef’ pitches, enabling a sweeping overview of both fields for spectators during tournaments and practice sessions.

The new stadium will serve as a welcoming contemporary facility hosting local sports and international visitors alike. We look forward to watching the project unfold in the coming months.

These holiday apartments offer private luxury living space with a sophisticated street presence. Located in the centre of Port Douglas, the seven apartments have either two or three bedrooms, including a penthouse with rooftop pool. Embracing the tropical setting, a covered walkway over a private rainforest bridge leads to each front door.

Each apartment has been designed to maximise the feeling of light, while embracing tropical living through light materials, water features and timber accents. Proudly created to be as eco-friendly as possible with solar panels, battery storage and smart technology, the single-stacked stepped design captures natural airflow which generates passive cooling and reduces the use of air conditioning, hence reducing electricity bills substantially.

The Tropics is home to nearly half the world’s population, has rapid population growth forecast, and significant economic and social inequality challenges. TUDLab's focus is on developing research and design capability in areas related to urbanisation in the Tropics.

We assist the development industry, governments and non-government organisations by providing the most effective and appropriate solutions for urban areas to address the key challenges facing the tropical world. We pull together the capacity and multidisciplinary expertise of James Cook University research through links to local governments and industry. This way, we engage with industry and bridge academic knowledge and real-world planning and design endeavours.

Roger Mainwood, Principal at TPG Architects, has been appointed as Adjunct Associate Professor at JCU. Roger is currently leading the review of the Cairns CBD and Esplanade Masterplan and consulted for Council on the Cairns City Height and Impact Study, leading to the national award winning Tropical Urbanism Policy.
